Named by French explorer’s for its barn-like silhouette, Mount Magazine rises over the sprawling Arkansas River Valley in west central Arkansas. At 2,753 feet above sea level, Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas and home to the Mount Magazine State Park, Arkansas’s newest state park. Here you’ll enjoy magnificent vistas of the broad river valley, the surrounding Ozark National Forest and distant mountains like Petit Jean and Mount Nebo. Mount Magazine has lured and fascinated explorers, naturalists, scientists and travelers for centuries, and you’ll understand why when you discover it for yourself. Over the years the mountain was home to many farms, home sites and resort lodges that are now only memories. From as early as the 1850s, travelers summered atop the mountain, attracted by lower temperatures that are usually 10-15 degrees cooler than the valley below. Today, Mount Magazine State Park stretches over 2,200 acres of the mountain’s plateau-like summit of mostly oak-hickory and pine forests. Altitude, geography and climate combine to create unique habitats for rare plants and animals. The elevation makes Mount Magazine a cool place to be during hot summer days. You’ll find a wide variety of choices for outdoor adventure. Hiking trails provide hours of enjoyable hiking, biking and horseback riding through the forests. For those with nerves of steel, there is rappelling and rock climbing on the 200-foot high bluffs. Take a leap with your hang glider to soar with the birds over the vast Arkansas River Valley, or enjoy the mountain at a more quiet pace photographing wildflowers or birds, and watching the many species of butterflies. New roads complete with bike lanes lead to the park’s new facilities. More park facilities are under construction and under design. Enjoy the new camping facilities at the Cameron Bluff Campground. Stay overnight in one of the 18 campsites offering water, electric and sewer hookups. Use the state park as a base camp and enjoy the hunting, fishing, boating, backpacking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities you can enjoy in the Ozark National Forest. Arkansas State Parks and the USDA Forest Service are working to recognize the mountain's recreational potential while conserving the natural resources of this unique ecosystem. Among many resource management techniques, the USDA Forest Service conducts controlled burns on small sections of the mountain to keep the habitat in its pre-settlement condition. As a result, glades, seeps and other unique habitat support a variety of wildlife, some found in few other places in the world.
