This is a point 10 miles east of the airport by the Opal area giving pilots the ability to land on Runway 27 (one of 4 on the field) in any weather where a pilot can see the runway 3/4 of a mile away and 300 feet above ground level. 

The airport has a non-precision approach to the field on VOR-A on 113.5 allowing pilots to get close.  Pilots must be able to see Runways 9 or 17 a mile away and 500 feet above ground level before landing.

Rick Lanman, Airport Manager

Rick Lanman  in January, 2008, became The Mena Municipal Intermountain Airport's new manager.  Rick Lanman was the former airport manager of several airports and college professor of Airport Management, Planning and Aviation Business.

In 2005 Lanman became the first airport manager at McPherson Airport in McPherson, Kansas, and remained there for two years.    He also was manager of the Mount Vernon, Illinois airport.

Lanman retired from his military career in 1997, and then went to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where he received a Master Degree in Airport Administration.  Lanman also taught at Southern Illinois University.

Lanman contacted Mena and interviewed for the position.  He feels that the potential at Mena for further growth is very obvious and through teamwork and a little luck, he feels this airport community will continue to be as prosperous as it has been in the past.
